Understanding ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It's a condition where people have trouble paying attention and may be overly active or impulsive. These behaviors are more intense and frequent than what is typical for their age.

Is ADHD common?

Yes, ADHD is one of the most common mental health conditions in children and teens. About 5.3% of people worldwide have it. In the UK, around 3.6% of boys and 0.85% of girls aged 5 to 15 are diagnosed.

Is ADHD caused by bad parenting or "naughty" kids?

No, ADHD is a real medical condition, not caused by bad parenting. It’s recognised in major health guidelines like the ICD-10 and DSM-V. While the exact cause is unknown, research shows it often runs in families and may be linked to chemical imbalances in the brain that affect focus and attention. Parents often feel relieved when they find out their child’s behavior is due to ADHD, not poor parenting.
